Background of the study
This study assesses the language policy challenges involved in maintaining the Hausa language heritage in Kano, a region with a rich cultural legacy. The Hausa language, central to the identity of its speakers, faces numerous pressures from globalization and modernization that threaten its traditional forms (Chukwu, 2023). Policy measures aimed at preserving the language have been introduced, yet significant challenges remain in ensuring their effective implementation. These challenges include inconsistent policy enforcement, inadequate resource allocation, and competing linguistic influences from dominant global languages. The research investigates how current language policies address these issues and the extent to which they succeed in safeguarding the cultural and linguistic heritage of Hausa. Through qualitative research methods—such as interviews with language experts, community leaders, and policymakers—the study provides an in-depth analysis of the complexities inherent in maintaining indigenous language heritage in an evolving socio-political environment. It also explores the role of education, media, and community initiatives in reinforcing Hausa language use (Chukwu, 2023). By integrating theoretical perspectives on language maintenance with empirical data, this research aims to contribute to the development of more robust language policies that better protect and promote Hausa heritage.
Statement of the problem
Despite the introduction of language policies intended to preserve Hausa language heritage in Kano, the implementation of these policies has been fraught with challenges. Inadequate funding, lack of consistent enforcement, and competition from dominant languages have undermined efforts to maintain linguistic traditions (Chukwu, 2023). Moreover, policy initiatives have not sufficiently addressed the needs of local communities, resulting in diminishing proficiency and cultural dilution among younger generations. This situation calls into question the overall effectiveness of existing language policies. The study aims to systematically identify these challenges and assess how they affect the preservation of Hausa language heritage, thereby offering recommendations for more sustainable policy measures (Okafor, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the challenges facing language policies aimed at maintaining Hausa language heritage in Kano.
To evaluate the effectiveness of current policy measures in preserving the language.
To recommend strategies to improve policy implementation and sustainability.
Research questions:
What are the main challenges in implementing Hausa language preservation policies?
How effective are the current policies in maintaining Hausa heritage?
What strategies can be adopted to overcome these challenges?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the challenges faced by language policies in maintaining the Hausa language heritage in Kano. The findings will inform policymakers and cultural advocates on the shortcomings of current measures and suggest actionable strategies for better policy enforcement and community engagement. By addressing these challenges, the research contributes to preserving the linguistic and cultural identity of the Hausa people (Okafor, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing language policy challenges in maintaining Hausa language heritage in Kano, focusing on policy implementation and its cultural impacts.
Definitions of terms:
Heritage: The cultural legacy passed down through generations.
Policy implementation: The process of putting policy decisions into effect.
